KDU's GCE A-Level High Achievers

Written by: Ann Teoh

19th August, Petaling Jaya

An Excellence Award Presentation was held for 61 students, in recognition of their achievement at the Cambridge International Examinations, GCE A-Level.

In her opening speech, Dr. Chia Chee Fen (CEO and Principal of KDU College) expressed her delight that the results have indicated a 27% increase in A-scorers. ‘KDU College is proud to announce that there are two KDUvers who have achieved 4A-Star results which indicate excellence. This high-achieving performance also reflects the lecturers’ experience in providing care, concern, motivation and guidance. I take enormous pride in recognising the hard work of the Pre-University academic staff who know all their students by name. “

4-Star Achievers

Brilliant 4A-Star achievers were Liang Xian Jun and See Yi Koon. Other high achievers with
4A's were: Wong Pei Jin, Soh Wen Chiat, Anton Wong Shaun Ming and Eng Soo Cheik. See Yi Koon and Anton Wong are consistently high achievers who had also scored straight A's at their last AS-Level examinations.

As one of the two perfect scorers in this examination, See Yi Koon is passionate about pursuing her dream to be a medical doctor. Having been accepted by the University of Newcastle, Yi Koon fervently hopes to secure a scholarship. Being the eldest sibling of five, she said that without a scholarship, it will not be possible for her to realise her dreams as it will be too much of a financial burden for her parents to sustain the cost of an education in medicine.

“I’ve put in my applications for many scholarships. Whilst many doors have been closed, I’m still positive that there will be good news for me. I’ve received a lot of prayer support from friends too. Also, I am very thankful that my lecturers have given a lot of help for this academic success. I may have put in a lot of hard work but I may not have been able to produce these excellent results if it had not been for the lecturers’ experience in preparing my classmates and I so very well for this GCE A-level exams.”
Positive for good news of a scholarship - Yi Koon
Yi Koon’s good friend, Anton Wong, has also secured a place at the University of Liverpool, U.K., to pursue his studies in medicine. Anton’s mother, Mrs Aclyn Wong said, “It will be wonderful if Anton can receive a JPA scholarship to make his dreams come true.” When asked on the secret of success of her high-achieving son, she shared, “From young, we’ve always prayed that in everything that Anton does, he will do it with excellence. When you believe, God will provide.

Also, it is the lecturers’ commitment and pastoral care given to the students that have been very encouraging and motivating. The lecturers would contact the students before, during and after the exams, just to check how they are faring and to give moral support – I’m most impressed not only by their academic expertise in guiding students to be high achievers, but I am also touched by their caring attitude. It is only after my son commenced his studies in KDU College, that I’ve come to realise about the quality of education that is being provided here. I’ve told many of my friends about this.” If Mrs Wong and Anton have found the lecturers inspiring, the lecturers too are inspired by them.

Excellence is the key for Anton

People Inspire People

For Ms Hema a/l Madhavan, who teaches English Literature, it is a 100% A-Star results from her students. “It has not been easy for them; they have all worked very hard. They are passionate about their studies and highly-energised to do well. It’s easier to teach them when they are so inspired to excel. If not for passion, there will be no commitment. So when they requested for Saturday classes, we gave as well because the energy is well-matched between lecturer and students. A man reaps what he sows, and this is their reward. I’m very proud of them.”

Senior lecturers, Ms Elsie Ang and Ms Tee Seok Chin agreed. “We are very proud of our students as they have put in a lot of effort to achieve this success. They have worked very hard.” Biology lecturer, Ms Chee Choon Won, said very humbly, “It’s the students’ hard work; I just facilitated.”

The other 4-A Star scorer, Liang Xian Jun, a JPA-sponsored student, and who is a former student of SMK Hwa Lian, in Taiping, said: “I’ve got helpful lecturers who are very dedicated and they are always encouraging and supportive. They do a lot of revision work with us.

Besides the emphasis on academic excellence, they also organised wholesome activities such asLove = Tangent 90 Degrees which we had enjoyed participating. Although we put in many hours of practice, this had also helped us to unwind as we had time to chat and socialise with our friends. It is events like this that when we look back next time, we will remember the good times in college and we will treasure these memories. Some parents may not understand and insisted that time spent in college should be purely academic, but as students, we need to de-stress too through all these other activities.”
Top scorer Xian Jun enjoyed her extra-curricular activities in college.

Her uncle, Mr Liang Voon Chiang, a property negotiator said this of Xian Jun. “She is very focused and always has done well. The family is very proud of her and admires her spirit as she balances her studies and her social life well. She is a cheerful, active person who participates in a lot of wholesome activities at school and in college.”

Grateful AS-Level students

Noemi Ridzuan, an AS-level straight A's achiever felt very blessed by God for this achievement. She said, “I’m grateful to God and to Petronas for giving me this opportunity to study at KDU College. To my awesome lecturers, I want to say, ‘Thanks so much! I couldn’t have done it without you!’”.

Nur Syhuhada bt Om, a former student of Kolej Yayasan Saad, Melaka, did her best to produce satisfying results. “I try not to let down those who had put their faith in me. So I do my best to live up to their expectations. In fact, I have exceeded their expectations.”

Live up to expectations - Nur Syhuhada
Eva Woon, the former head prefect of SMK St. Mary, and a JPA-sponsored student, scored straight A's too. She attributed her excellent results to her lecturers as well as good time management. “I’ve put in equal amount of play time, study time and for all other side projects. Play time is vital to release stress from studies and carrying out other projects. Planning had also definitely played a big role in helping me to prioritise. And our hardworking and dedicated lecturers have gone the extra mile for us, giving extra classes and tutorials before the AS exams.”
Plan and Prioritise - Eva
Her beaming classmate, Yugenderan a/l Balamohan, who had worked very hard as the President of the Malay Cultural Society in launching Malam Kebudayaan Melayu (MKM), is a straight-A's achiever too. “How did you do it, Yugenderan?” he was asked.

Manage your time well and know your priorities - Yugenderan
Good time management

“Actually, I balanced my role between MKM and AS exams. The Malam Kebudayaan Melayu event that we pulled off this year was a product of solid ground work that was started long before our AS examinations. I had to dash to meetings between classes. Nevertheless, all these tasks didn’t divert my focus from my AS exams. Since I had little time to study, I had to make sure my time was fully utilised. Managing our time, prioritising our activities, saying “No” to other irrelevant activities were experiences most of us in Pre-U have learned to do well.

Prioritise

There are no secret tips. Success is like baking a cake. You need to have a variety of ingredients, the right skills and commitment to bake a great cake. In my case, I planned a specific study time table about two months before the start of the AS exams. Then, I had to prioritise my studies and halt all other activities. In fact, I had to think twice even before going out for late dinners with friends.

Motivation

Motivation played a crucial role in keeping the momentum go. My source of motivation was other people's expectations. I didn’t want to let my parents, lecturers and friends down.

Gratitude

Apart from my worshipped parents, I would like to express my gratitude to all my lecturers. The only problem I ever had in KDU College was differentiating a lecturer and a good friend, because both of them are exactly the same to me. Also, my grateful thanks to my sponsors, namely PETRONAS, for trusting me with this scholarship. It is because of them I am here today, and it is also because of them I have an excellent university to go to someday. They deserve more credit than has been mentioned (I hope they read this too).

Congratulations

I want to convey my warmest congratulations to all my friends over their achievements. I am proud to be a part of the June 09 intake as we all shared the common goal of success. I would also like to say, that although academic achievements is what most people look for in a student. I have always believed that a great student is not only valued by his paper qualifications, but also through his spirit. Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to go on that counts the most.”

A blogger's euphoria

This article may not have articulated the true feelings of the high achievers' euphoria, but Sasha Yeoh Ee Ping has blogged about it. It is an outpouring of true joy and excitement and indeed, a reflection of many achievers. She shares (source: Sasha's blog):
"I checked my Cambridge A-Levels (AS) exam results online and I saw a line of 'A': Accounting, Economics, History, Mathematics.

Let me bring you through my reaction and emotion as it came. I stood up, and started jumping around the hall, literally! Mummy was walking to the car, and when she saw me jumping as I screamed "YES! YES! YES", I would think that she knew it was good news. Seeing me being a human popcorn, Daddy came out from the car, stood at the doorstep as I hugged him tight and said with teary eyes, "Straight A's, Daddy. Straight A's."

It was at that very moment, tears started rolling down my cheeks. It was a very overwhelming feeling, in a good way of course. I was and am happy beyond words. In this joy, I count my blessings. The three people who I really owe this to; God, Daddy and Mummy. Thank you, God. Thank you, Daddy. Thank you, Mummy.

To the amazing lecturers of KDU College, you have been the light in my darkness. Through the ignorant questions, the noisy moments, the mountainous number of assignments; you have been an inspiration. In no particular order, these are the lecturers who molded me into the pre-university student that I am - Miss Sathyavathy, Miss Hema a/l Madhavan, Miss Elsie, Ang Miss Angeline, Greenall Miss Angeline Ng, Miss Tee Siok Chin, Mr Thiru and Mr Hilman Oo.

Thank you for being so patient with my occasional innocent questions in class, for relentlessly offering support in times of crisis, for whipping me back on track when I scored poorly for the trial exams, for everything that you have done in the past one year. THANK YOU!"

Counting my blessings - Sasha
